Kangana Ranaut in a still from Revolver Rani

After the critically acclaimed performance in Vikas Bahl’s  ‘Queen’, Kangana Ranaut does it again in Revolver Rani. In a movie with an otherwise confusing plot and average performances, Kangana wins the hearts with a spectacular performance portraying the role of a hot-headed dacoit of Chambal.

Set in the rugged Chambal valley, Kangana Ranaut plays the role of Alka Singh, a daku and political heavyweight obsessed with alcohol, sex and her toy boy, a struggling bollywood actor Rohan Kapoor (Vir Das). She brings alive her character with strong dialogues and equally quirky costumes that includes dhoti pants, army jackets, combat boots, metallic bras, frizzy hair and funky glasses.

The first half of the film is delightful where Alka takes on her political opponents in style firing bullets, laughing maniacally, delivering punches and exhibiting her ‘dabangg’ attitude in power-packed sequences. She falls in love with Rohan Kapoor which results in a role reversal of the genders up to the extent funding his movie, taking the lead on the bed and saving him from the goons and funding his movie.

However, the second half sees the movie getting struck between a comedy and an action flick, doing justice to none. The script fails to do justice to the role of Alka Singh and Kangana’s performance. It gets predictable showing Alka’s dark past that forced her to pick guns. It then turns into another sob story with Alka desire to become a mother.

The climax is far from reality and leaves scope for a possible sequel where Alka would return to avenge the wrongs done to her.

Verdict: The confusing plot and confusing script have spoiled the goods; however you can watch the movie just for Kangana.

Stars: 3.5/5
