India’s oldest city and the electoral capital of Lok Sabha 2014 witnessed unprecedented scenes in a mega show of strength by Narendra Modi. Thousands of BJP supporters including party workers and common public flocked the streets with flags, conches, modi masks, caps, t-shirts and conches as the holy city was painted in saffron.

Modi’s road show started from the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) where he paid floral tributes to Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya at the campus. Accompanied by Amit Shah, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Ravi Shankar Prasad and other party leaders, Modi marched towards the Collectorate in an open van through streets swarmed with supporters waiting to have a glimpse of him. The 3-km road show took over three hours to complete during which he also garlanded the statues of Sardar Patel, Dr. B R Ambedkar and Swami Vivekananda. He later filed his nomination with Giridhar Malviya – a retired judge and grandson of Madan Mohan Malviya, classical singer Pandit Chhannu Lal Mishra, Veer Bhadra Nishad – a boatman and Ashok – a representative of the weaver community notably proposing his nomination.

Currently held by senior BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi, the electoral battle in Varanasi has become one of the most keenly watched contest after AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal decided to challenge Narendra Modi and gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari withdrew  to avoid the division of votes.

Varanasi goes to polls on the 12th of May in the last phase of voting for Lok Sabha 2014 where the 16 lakh voters would decide the fate of the contenders from the seat.
